Duas for Anxiety and Stress (with Arabic & Translation)

Introduction

My heart is racing. I can’t sleep. My mind won’t stop. I feel like something bad is going to happen. I try to pray, but I can’t concentrate. I make dua, but I don’t feel anything. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Anxiety and stress are among the most common struggles people face today. And as Muslims, we have a powerful tool that others don’t: dua. Dua is not just asking Allah for things. It’s a connection. It’s surrender. It’s remembering that there is Someone greater than our worries.

In this article, I’ll share:

  • 10 powerful duas from the Quran and Sunnah for anxiety

  • Arabic text with translation and transliteration

  • When and how to recite them

  • Practical tips for making dua more effective

Before You Begin: The Mindset of Dua

Before we get to the duas, understand this:

Dua is not magic. You won’t recite a few words and instantly feel peace. Dua is a process. It’s a relationship. It’s turning to Allah again and again until your heart finds rest.

Allah says:

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.” (Quran, 2:186)

Notice: Allah doesn’t say “I respond sometimes” or “I respond if you deserve it.” He says, “I respond when he calls.”
Your job is to call. Allah’s job is to respond in His way, in His time.

How to Make Dua More Effective

1. Begin with praise and salawat
Start by praising Allah and sending blessings on the Prophet ﷺ.

2. Be present
Don’t just recite words. Feel them. Mean them.

3. Repeat with conviction
Some duas are meant to be repeated 3 times, 7 times, or 100 times.

4. Combine the dua with the action
Make dua for peace, then do things that bring peace – deep breathing, walking, talking to someone.

5. Have certainty
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Ask Allah with certainty that He will respond.”

6. Be patient
Sometimes the answer is delayed. Sometimes it’s different from what you asked. Sometimes it’s better.

Practical Tips for Anxiety (Beyond Dua)

Dua is powerful, but it’s not the only tool. Here are practical steps to combine with the dua:

1. Deep Breathing

When anxious, breathe deeply:

  • Inhale for 4 counts

  • Hold for 4 counts

  • Exhale for 6 counts

  • Repeat 5 times

2. Grounding Technique (5-4-3-2-1)

When overwhelmed, notice:

  • 5 things you can see

  • 4 things you can touch

  • 3 things you can hear

  • 2 things you can smell

  • 1 thing you can taste

3. Talk to Someone

Anxiety grows in isolation. Share with someone you trust.

4. Limit Caffeine and Sugar

Both can trigger or worsen anxiety.

5. Move Your Body

Exercise releases endorphins that fight anxiety.

6. Get Professional Help

If anxiety is affecting your daily life, please see a counselor. There’s no shame in it.

A Client’s Story

“A sister came to me, let’s call her Maryam. She had severe anxiety. Panic attacks. Can’t sleep. Can’t focus.
She told me: ‘I make dua. Why isn’t Allah helping me?’
I asked her: ‘What else are you doing?’ She wasn’t doing anything, just waiting for the dua to work like magic.

We worked together on:

  • Daily adhkar (morning and evening)

  • Specific duas for her situation

  • CBT techniques for anxiety

  • Lifestyle changes (sleep, diet, exercise)

Within months, she was better. Not perfect, but better.
She told me: ‘I thought dua wasn’t working. Turns out, I wasn’t working with it.’
Dua opens the door. You still have to walk through.”
